In this course, we will be exploring ethical considerations, which are all about making choices that are fair, responsible, and respectful to others. Since SHSM programs are designed to prepare you for real workplace experiences, it’s important to learn how to handle situations where the “right answer” might not always be obvious. That’s where the DECIDE model comes in. This model breaks decision-making into six simple steps: define the problem, explore your options, consider the consequences, identify your values, decide on the best action, and evaluate the results afterward. By practicing these steps, you’ll learn how to think carefully before acting and how to make choices that line up with your personal values and professional responsibilities.

We’ll also use the LENS model, which helps you “look through different lenses” when you’re faced with an ethical dilemma. This means slowing down to see things from multiple perspectives, such as how your choice might impact your peers, your community, or even your future career. Using the LENS model encourages you to think beyond yourself and make decisions that are inclusive and respectful. By applying both the DECIDE and LENS models throughout this course, you’ll not only develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, but you’ll also practice being someone others can trust to act with integrity. These tools will help prepare you to succeed in your SHSM program and in the workplace beyond.
